Listen | Out Go The Lights : “Big Balloon”

Out Go The Lights

Back in 2011 Florida indie pop outfit Out Go The Lights released their  SUN EP, a charming, cohesive collection of tracks for a young band – especially from one still in high school.  Crafting melodic indie rock in a similar vein as Philly quartet Alex G while leaning a little more into those jubilant pop moments, Out Go The Lights were a far cry away from your standard early teenage rock band. Now, with some time away and some years under their belt, Out Go The Lights return with “Big Balloon” having outgrown the novelty of being a high school band while maintaining the same level of thoughtful evenly paced lyricism.

“Big Balloon”, a pitch perfect pop rock track with just the right pinch of sugary sweetness, is a decided more pop-centric direction than any of the later SUN EP cuts and yet so much like “Pericles” and “Colombia” the trajectory make sense. It’s a very natural progression anchored by the heart-on-your-sleeve sincerity of singer/songwriter Alex Clements.  Richly melodic and instantly ear-catching, “Big Balloon” pairs a sort of pop-punk delivery with out and out vibrant pop moments to create an infectious earworm that’ll be hard to expel once it’s taken root. Luckily, “Big Balloon” is just the song you want stuck in your head for hours and hours.

“Big Balloon” part of  the “Big Balloon / Real States” digital single will be out October 15th on Relief in Abstract.
