Vintage Moon welcomed us into the new year back in early January with “Dissertation Games” from their debut Sinterpretation EP. Now the darkwave Los Angeles indie-rock band are back with a follow up, “Tyro”, from a yet unnamed second EP, out sometime later this year:
There’s something sinister afoot in “Tyro”. With one prickly gesture we’re given a peach, shimmering and golden skin hiding a rotten core; the other hand’s up to no good. It’s the sonic equivalent of a deep tissue massage, pleasant sounding and ultimately rewarding but unsettlingly stressful in the interim. “Tyro” heightens my senses, forcing an alertness that trumps any passive listening experience. It’s a great song in its oddness — the monotone call-and-response, the sharp contrast from its knivey guitars against the velvet synths, the overtly sexual imagery — ultimately aiming to disenchant as much as it enchants. I’d say mission, splendidly, accomplished.
