Jonsi, singer from Icelandic group Sigur Ros, crafts fantastic melodies when traversing musical landscapes solo. Jonsi was recently featured on a really interesting episode of NPR’s All Tech Considered discussing the trend of high-tech concerts. Jonsi’s anthemic solo compositions are better suited for smaller theaters but that doesn’t mean his live performances are any smaller in spectacle, besides anyone who’s been to a Sigur Ros concert knows they don’t do “small” very well. However, his concerts don’t use a ton of digital screens and laser lights but projectors and custom-built backdrops one might see at an opera or musical.
Think of what they’re doing as the opposite of a movie soundtrack. In Hollywood, a musician is usually brought in to compose for scenes that have already been shot. In this case, 59 Productions was presented the songs and asked to create a VISUAL soundtrack.
The company’s Mark Grimmer says it’s kind of a cross between an art installation, a live gig and a film. Grimmer helped come up with animated sequences of wolves chasing deer across a forest; a fire that burns through the set; and a climactic, violent thunderstorm that appears to consume the band during the finale.
But none of these scenes are happening on a screen.
They’re all projected onto the walls, the objects on stage, even the musicians.
Definitely makes me want to see him in concert! The fine folks at XL Recordings have a personalized mix CD made by Jonsi covering thirteen of his favorite songs, from tracks like “Ave Maria” to tunes by Audrey Hepburn and Billie Holiday, for us to giveaway. The albums have personalized artwork and neat intricacies you won’t get elsewhere, mainly because this rare mix won’t be officially released.
