One of my most anticipated albums for a couple of years now has been Guards‘ debut album. After their debut EP in 2010, which included a handful of absolutely ridiculous garage pop songs (three of which we put out on our very first 7″ through Small Plates), and countless unstoppable live shows (including a particularly unforgettable performance at our Hype Hotel showcase last SXSW), they skyrocketed to the top of my bands to watch list. And now the time has come for In Guards We Trust, and we have a brand new single to absorb:
Some bands do pop songs, and some create their own. While “Ready To Go” is easily the most radio friendly of any of the songs Guards have released, listen close and you’ll hear a more art-pop-ish song in disguise. Blown out kick drums, church bells, double tracked vocal harmonies, bending guitars by the thousands. Sure it’s got an anthemic chant of a chorus that borders on “over the top” at times, but it sounds more Smashing Pumpkins than fucking Fun. Guards can do no wrong in my book.
