Heard this one via Smoke Don’t Smoke and couldn’t help myself. Glow Marrow is one of countless bands birthed almost essentially by Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion and the futuristic pop, manic experimentalism and whimsical ecstasy contained within (so much for freak folk). But I’m not like those other haters and AC purists, who won’t let anyone be influenced by one of the last decade’s most influential bands (yet in the same breath think Girls, DIIV, Best Coast, Cloud Nothings, Japandroids, The Men, Washed Out, and Cults are sultans of originality // HAH). And I’m also not one to judge a band entirely on who I think they sound like, so…
Eighties synth beats, steel drums, shrill vocals and bit crushed guitars, all put through the digital blender, swirl around like boardwalk cotton candy in a hurricane. It’s an all or nothing approach to electronic pop that we’ve seen shades of before, the new age equivalent of Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound.” The trick, the mastery, is to produce such an enigmatic sound that envelops the listener (as opposed to pushing them away). Glow Marrow do that exceedingly well on “Julian”, and probably throughout their upcoming debut EP.
Braver Days (cover above by the wonderful Tara Helfer) will be out soon… we’ll keep you posted.
