[Listen] Blonds: “Kite”

 [Listen] Blonds: Kite

The verdict is still out whether the Carl-Rae-fronted Miami indie pop outfit Blonds is of the earnest, charming variety (TV Girl) or the trashy, superficial crap-pop variety (Sleigh Bells comes to mind), but “Kite” is a nod in the right direction:

Doesn’t this song have a whole grab bag of indie flavors-of-the-month? Static-y ghettoteched beats, lo-fi female vocals, chipper 60s pop melodies, vintage violin samples, fucking xylophone, even. Blonds have created a highly likable, harmless little indie pop jam here, leaning towards a bright future but still near the edge of the sort of vapid meaninglessness that tends to fill out people’s iPods before they get a clue. I’m crossing my fingers for the former, that Blonds tap Magnetic Fields’ honesty and Unicorns’ playfulness, Wise Blood’s forward-thinking and TV Girl’s clever dexterity. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.
