[MP3] new Destroyer: “Kaputt”

Dan Bejar [MP3] new Destroyer: Kaputt

The world needs more Dan Bejar! The multi-talented musician behind Destroyer is one of the most enjoyable characters in independent rock, crafting memorable lyrics and melodies that never lose their appeal. I often relish the songs he writes/sings for The New Pornographers, so when he announced another Destroyer record my building anticipation was unavoidable. Although Merriam-Webster would disagree, his upcoming LP Kaputt is anything but incapacitated or destroyed.

This album might not be as instantly infectious as Rubies but it’s incredibly adventurous. Bejar has taken his sound in a new direction, implementing spacey synth and loads of smooth jazzy overtones. I could share the obvious single “Chinatown” but six-minute space rock title track “Kaputt” sends me deeper down the rabbit hole with each listen.. especially if said rabbit hole was a giant saxophone. Once the lyric + melody combo of “Wasting your days, chasing some girls / Alright / Chasing cocaine, through the back rooms of the world all night” grabs your ears, just kick up your feet and enjoy the ride down the lazy river that is Bejar’s temporal lobe.

Kaputt releases January 25th via Merge Records, preorder it here.
