Perhaps I was getting a dosage of Christmas in July when stumbling upon Unknown Mortal Orchestra, the Hypeworthy act responsible for some seriously funky jams with distinctive guitar work. Now the holiday season is upon us and U.M.O. is back with a pair of new songs that’ll be bundled with the immensely catchy “FFuny Frends” and “Thought Ballune” on a debut 7″ E.P. released via The Sounds of Sweet Nothing.
Shifting from Northwestern guitar rock with some soulful beats to a full on, R&B infused track like “How Can U Luv Me” makes me excited about what the mysterious Ruben from Portland, Oregon is capable of. He jumps from genre to genre faster than Kanye West changes Twitter topics, albeit with far more seamless success than West. You still won’t find much information about U.M.O. on the internet but a 7″ release is a step in the right direction.
Preorder the 7″ for cheap on Bandcamp and spin another U.M.O. track titled “Nerve Damage!” – a post-punk number with a washed out grunge feel.
