The latest in our mpFree series (highlighting the best free albums being released on the web) comes from Virginia Beach native Adrian Todd Webb who records as Seamonster. Fitting somewhere between the Magnetic Fields and the rougher side of Jeff Mangum, Webb crafts joyous, heartfelt little pop songs with a distinct lo-fi home-recorded sound. You can almost hear the bed creaking as he strums.
[MP3] Seamonster – Oh Appalachia
If you long for the days of carefree indie pop that seemed to earmark much of the music released around 2004 – 2005, it doesn’t get much sweeter than this. “Oh Appalachia” has it all: fluttering synth melodies, anthemic vocal harmonies, memorably affectionate lyrics (“oh how we both are chil-der-en”) — a pining for flesh and blood and good intentions in a world of music seemingly dominated by the dispassionate- and disaffected- (sounding, at least) and alienated and disenfranchised. Seamonster has true heart and soul, even melancholic at times, something that comes across in spades on the Two Birds EP.
