[MP3] Fever RayMercy Street

My brain cannot comprehend the strange relationship between Peter Gabriel and the indie world, from teaming up with Hot Chip for a Vampire Weekend cover to his latest Scratch My Back LP featuring covers of Arcade Fire and Bon Iver. I guess said indie world feels the need to pay him back every now and again, so Fever Ray busted out a cover of “Mercy Street” that’s damn good.

[MP3] Here We Go MagicTerminally Chill

Until today, I never even thought how a cover of Neon Indian could sound because I convinced myself his music and style would make for a tough rendition. Then again, anything with a set of lyrics and recognizable melody can be covered so it shouldn’t have surprised me when Here We Go Magic took a stab at it. Their rendition of “Terminally Chill” (one of the better song titles from the last few years) definitely has the haphazard feel of a bedroom composition while retaining enough familiarity to make Alan Palomo proud.

The last cover closing out the first edition of Thursdays and Covers in our new redesign is one I stumbled upon a few months ago by Antony Hegarty. Without a full band to back him up, Antony takes to the Abbey Road studios for his take on the popular Beatles track “Here Comes The Sun”. It’s nothing more than Antony on a piano but he slows the song down and makes it sound as if it was one of his own. Every time he opens his mouth to sing, I’m reminded vocal chords are incredible things.

The Fever Ray cover is great… but of course she is covering a great musician.

Absolutely love Fever Ray’s cover of Peter Gabriels’ ‘Mercy Street’- have you heard Peter Gabriel’s version of ‘Flume’?
You can have a listen here, if you’re interested: http://atthesinema.co.uk/?p=1862
Thanks!
