[MP3] Telenovelas: “One and Only”

It’s all too common a routine for bands to pop into the inbox that I’ve never heard of before, yet something about them seems so familiar. Like a deranged, musical déjà vu or falling asleep while watching a DVD only to wake up to the menu music annoyingly looping over and over again – something strange is going on here but what is it?

This was the feeling I had when opening an extremely sparse email from Brooklyn foursome Telenovelas, a lo-fi outfit with enough lint in their belly-buttons (fuzz) and sand in their shoes (surf) to confuse anyone on the border of rock genres. Perhaps it’s their band name and too many Spanish classes spent watching Telemundo or maybe Dave Rawkblog mentioned it in a social media timeline, since he coyly wrote about them a few weeks back. Either way, strange vibes aside, I’m glad their music found my ears:

Telenovelas humorously claim their music is “summer goth” which fits this post perfectly, as it makes little to no sense yet sounds quite familiar. Simple melodies, catchy riffs, and emotionally fuzzy male/female vocals make this an easy track to enjoy. It’s hard to ignore the surf rock riffs or the female vocals, which sound like a juvenile Neko Case sulking through her teenage angst years.
