Sometimes you never know where the next new band you hear is going to come from, but I’m glad to see Louisiana getting into the indie influx. For such a musically diverse and historic city like New Orleans, I’m surprised there aren’t a few parts of town that churn out indie acts like they’re going out of style. Perhaps I’m not looking in the right places or the big brass influence is somewhat offputting to local acts, but former New Orleans faves o’ mine have since packed up and moved to Brooklyn (like Blair).
Yesterday I stumbled upon an EP from Lafayette/New Orleans outfit Givers, and boy was it ever a fun listen. Capitalizing off of their hometown’s funky culture, Givers craft delicious pop songs with sun-drenched guitars, playful percussion, and smooth keys. The afro-pop style of Vampire Weekend can be heard throughout their tracks albeit with a more intense guitar and fun female vocals.
[MP3] Givers – Up Up Up
From what I hear, this band puts on one hell of a live show that impresses almost everyone in the audience. They throw together a wild light spectacle and have an onstage chemistry that’s downright contagious. I’m hoping to catch them in 2010 when Givers release their debut LP.
