[MP3] Candy ClawsDon’t Turn Around

If there is one band that has the promise to turn into a great act, the young trio Candy Claws of Ft. Collins, Colorado definitely have said potential. After listening to a collection of demos and poking around their MySpace, I’m interested to see if they can take the right steps toward a hypeworthy billing. One of the songs Candy Claws have shoved into my ears is a fantastic cover of Ace of Base’s “Don’t Turn Around”. It’s a fuzzy, melodic, and homemade rendition that I’ll undoubtedly listen to more than the original.

[MP3] MetricDon’t Think Twice, It’s Alright (Acoustic)

I’m not sure which I like more, Metric or the performance power of Emily Haines. Are they one in the same? Luckily, I don’t have to choose a favorite because in this reality they can both peacefully co-exist and create some smashing songs. Metric’s live sets, especially those of an acoustic nature, typically contain some great covers like Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”. Switching from Dylan’s shakily poetic rambling to Haines’ smooth voice is enough of a change and pleasant surprise to make for an enjoyable rendition.

[MP3] Cat PowerDreams (Live)

It’s ironic that Fleetwood Mac’s only number one hit was written by Stevie Nicks on a piano in all of 10 minutes, yet it still isn’t my favorite song by the ever-changing lineup of musicians present during the bands existence. Regardless, “Dreams” was a catchy ditty that helped cement Rumors as one of the best selling records of all time. Cat Power, no stranger to the power of fantastic female songwriting, took a turn in covering Nicks’ hit. The track’s tempo is slowed down and is subjected to the bluesy, emotional drawl of Chan Marshall’s voice (which is always a good thing).

I liked these covers a lot. I have been on quite the cover search and this was one of the better sources. I had some luck here too. More great covers.

Dear IGIF,

"Don't Turn Around" from Ace of Base is actually itself a cover. It was preceeded 6 years by Aswad's "Dont Turn Around", a semi-successful reggae-pop record.

Cheers.

Woah that Candy Claws cover is so awesome. I posted about some covers recently and the post was real popular, good to see people still dig a good cover.
