That time of the week again for those type of songs. Except I’m in an extra special Elliott Smith mode today and so are the covers!
[MP3] Elliott Smith – I’m Only Sleeping
The only thing better than Elliott’s music is his taste in music. No one can cover The Beatles as well as he could, which is why this cover glows. The end to a live set in Portland – part of the crowd actually got on-stage with Smith and sang backup for him. Wow. Just.. wow.

The first bootleg concert I downloaded was an Elliott Smith show at the Black Cat in D.C. circa 1998. It still remains one of my favorite live recordings and covering Lennon doesn’t exactly hurt your setlist. If I could go back in time, this would be one of the places I’d stop.

Like I said, his taste in music is incredible. I still think Cat Stevens is one the greatest songwriters of all time, although Paste royally shat on him. Fortunately, Elliott recognized his greatness and took a classic Stevens and put a soft spoken Elliott-ness on it.

Elliot Smith was wonderful. His cover of “these days” remains my favorite of him. He’d had made a great sixth beatle, dont you think?
these tracks bring back a lot of memories. and although i pride myself on my massive elliott collection, i can’t say i’d ever heard that first beatles cover.
seeing him live was one of the defining moments in my life.
when that demo of trouble first leaked, i was at the height of my elliott obsession. it was like a sign…as if he had sent us another gift from beyond the grave, and a very chilling one at that. i got shivers immediately upon hearing the first chords, and pretty much cried as the song played. i must have listened to that on repeat about 30 times right then and there.
These are kickass! Ahhh!
