They’re another 8-member ensemble from Canada. They’ve toured with the likes of The Unicorns and Xiu Xiu. Until now, they’ve solely been known for their energetic live shows and experimental instrumentation (think Animal Collective or Black Dice)…but now they’ve packed all that hysteria into their debut KRS release, Boo Hoo Hoo Boo. They are They Shoot Horses Don’t They.
From their press info:
âThey Shoot Horses, Donât They? sound like post-punks raised under a big top, albeit one under the direction of Igor Stravinsky or Sun Ra rather than P.T. Barnumâ Boston Phoenix
âIt’s not that often you come across a band that puts a shit-eating grin on your face so wide that you’re able to swallow all the bullshit and lies and deceptions of the 21st centuryâŠâ Popmatters.com
I think the AC and Xiu Xiu comparissons are obvious but a little too convenient. While TSHDT definitely recall a similar “freak folk” nature, they don’t really belong in the same camp…they have much more going on, a much denser and broader sound…I guess it sounds a little less like “look at this crazy shit we thought of while we were high!” and a little more like “look at this crazy shit we thought of! now who wants to get high?!” Maybe a better comparisson would be to the lesser known pre-Xiu Xiu band, IBOPA. Anyway, sorry for the delay! Here are the songs (both recommended):
Based on the response to the Sigur Ros post, looks like I’ll be writing a review after all. Also, it turns out that I may in fact still be writing the review for Filter…we’ll see how the logistics work out, but either way it’ll be posted on here or on Filter’s site. More info soon…
