Thursdays and Covers

thursday Thursdays and Covers
Thursday is that day before Friday, when you’re filled with anticipation that tomorrow is the last day before the weekend liberates you from any and all work, temporarily at least. So, bear with me when I make this connection, Thursdays are like covered songs. Could be better than the original or worse, different or the same, regardless you’re filled with the anticipation of hearing the song even if you haven’t heard the original. This, my friends, makes both Thursdays and covers mystical.

So without further ado, I’ll post three covers on each Thursday until my collection of covers depletes (which could be eons).

Ted Leo – Since U Been Gone & Maps
We all know the musical genius of Ted Leo, but his ability to cover Kelly Clarkson and incorporate the addictive chorus of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Maps is down right insane, in my opinion. But insane works really well for Mr. Leo.

Bright Eyes – The Biggest Lie
Sure, Conor Oberst has been making music since puberty but when he chose to cover Elliott Smith, what a creative jump. Elliott, being one of the greatest of our time and having one of the most tranquil voices, proceeds to get covered by the distinctive wavering voice of Bright Eyes. Brilliant? Give it a listen.

Sufjan Stevens – The Star Spangled Banner
Sure, the two previous covers may have taken courage by both of the covering artists…but I am willing to bet this cover takes the cake for “Most Courageous Cover”. I don’t know many people who actually think to cover the National Anthem, but if there was an artist who dared to do it, and actually make it BETTER, then it would be none other than the 50 States Man himself.

Thursday Covers. I, for one, am in agreement.
